Sustainability
Sustainability at North Coal is grounded in the long-term stewardship of land, water, and relationships in the Elk Valley. These considerations are integrated into technical studies, permitting activities, and engagement processes to support responsible and well-informed project development.
Environment
North Coal is committed to excellence in environmental performance. We manage our operations in a manner that is resource-efficient, minimizes our impact upon the environment and work closely with our communities and Indigenous people to ensure their values are reflected in our practices.
Environmental management, both during and after operations, is a key element of North Coal’s business philosophy. At all stages of development, there is a commitment to ensuring that any potential risks to the environment are identified and suitable controls put in place to mitigate their effects. At all times, North Coal will comply with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, and requirements.
Community
North Coal’s social approach focuses on building respectful relationships and maintaining open, transparent engagement with First Nations, local stakeholders, and regional partners.
North Coal recognizes that strong, resilient communities are essential to the long-term success of resource development in British Columbia. The Company is committed to being an active and constructive presence in the regions where it operates, contributing time, expertise, and financial support to local initiatives.
North Coal supports a range of community programs and organizations that reflect local priorities and values, including outdoor and conservation groups, fish and wildlife organizations, chambers of commerce, and community service organizations. Wherever possible, support is focused on initiatives that promote safety, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.
By fostering open communication, local involvement, and collaborative partnerships, North Coal aims to contribute to healthy, vibrant communities and to build lasting relationships based on trust and mutual respect.
Indigenous Relationships
North Coal acknowledges that the Michel Coal Project is located within the asserted traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation and may also be of interest to other Indigenous Nations and Bands in the region.
North Coal is committed to working respectfully and collaboratively with the leadership and knowledge holders of the Ktunaxa Nation to understand and address their interests, concerns, values, and policy objectives. This commitment is reflected in an engagement agreement with the Ktunaxa Nation Council, which establishes a clear process and framework for Ktunaxa participation in project planning and advancement.
North Coal recognizes its responsibility to engage early, transparently, and respectfully, and to ensure Indigenous perspectives are meaningfully considered in a manner that reflects traditional, cultural, social, and economic values.
North Coal is committed to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and is dedicated to growing and promoting constructive relationships that define shared values and priorities.
Health & Safety
Health and safety are fundamental to how North Coal operates. The Company is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace where employees and contractors are properly trained, equipped, and supported to perform their work efficiently and return home safely each day.
All employees and contractors are expected to comply with health and safety requirements and to act in a manner that protects themselves and others. North Coal supports a culture of accountability and empowerment, including the right to refuse work where conditions are believed to be unsafe.
North Coal maintains a health and safety management system focused on continuous improvement, with the goal of protecting the well-being of employees, contractors, and the communities in which it operates. This approach is guided by the following principles:
No Harm: Injuries and incidents are preventable through the application of the hierarchy of controls and effective risk management.
No Repeats: All incidents are investigated to identify root causes, with corrective actions implemented to prevent recurrence.
Zero Tolerance: Safety rules and standards are clear, non-negotiable, and consistently enforced.
Diversity & Inclusion
North Coal is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace that embraces the uniqueness of individuals. Diverse and inclusive teams have a positive impact on our operations and lead to a better company. It is also important for our team to reflect the diversity of the communities and stakeholders we work with.
Workplace diversity is understanding, accepting, and valuing differences between people; differences including age, ethnicity, Indigenous origin or heritage, gender, physical attributes, beliefs, language, sexual orientation, education, and experience. Workplace inclusion builds a collaborative, supportive, and respectful environment that increases the participation and contribution of all employees.
North Coal is and will continue to be a diverse and inclusive place of employment. We are constantly learning and evolving to be more inclusive of all individuals. We believe all employees deserve a work environment that values and respects individuals for their talents, skills, and abilities and that such an environment benefits the collective.
