North Coal Limited is a Canadian resource company based in Sparwood, British Columbia.  North Coal is focused on the exploration and development of the proposed Michel Coal Project, located in the Crowsnest Coalfield, British Columbia. North Coal holds the coal licenses to over 8,000 hectares of coal licence area within the Corbin Valley, 15 km southeast of Sparwood. North Coal has identified significant coking coal resources within the valley, referred to as the Loop Ridge, Michel Head and Tent Mountain deposits. The Michel Coal Project has an estimated mine life of up to 30 years, depending on production rates. North Coal believes that excellence in workplace safety, environmental performance and stewardship is essential to their business success.

Brian brings over 30 years of industry experience across multiple countries in base & precious metals, diamonds and iron ore.  Brian’s most recent positions were as Executive Vice-President Sustainability & External Affairs and Chief Operating Officer for Newmont Mining Corporation.

John Pumphrey

Chief Operating Officer

John has been with North Coal for nearly 5 years. He brings over 20 years of experience in the mining sector from a variety of roles both in the oil sands operations and Elk Valley coal mines, most recently as Manager of Environment with Teck Resources.


Chief Financial Officer

Novalee has been with North Coal for nearly 5 years. She brings over 20 years of accounting and finance experience to the company, ranging from financial institutions to mining companies.


Chief Geologist

Dave has worked extensively in lead geology roles for coal companies in BC. He has also worked in the hard rock industry at exploration stages of development.

Bill Arling

Director of Environment

Bill brings over 20 years of experience in the mining sector to the company with significant experience in mine permitting and Environmental Assessment.


North Coal currently operates with a small, dedicated and expert team led by seasoned mining and environmental professionals. Our leadership team holds a vast range of knowledge and expertise in a variety of mining operations from coal operations, oil sands, reclamation leadership, permitting, cooperating with First Nations, and economic development. 

North Coal is committed to building strong local communities. Our current operational staff are employed locally and our planning teams hold an extensive amount of local land, stewardship and technical-based knowledge.
